A lot of times, especially in women, if they don’t have something, they don’t see themselves as beautiful. Their self esteem is lowered because of the material things they lack. In “The Necklace”, Madame Loisel was upset with her middle-class status, because she felt that she was too pretty to be not rich. When she had Madame Forestier’s necklace and her expensive dress, she felt beautiful. She got a chance to get people’s attention and be happier. “Madame Loisel was a success. She was the prettiest woman present, elegant, graceful, smiling, and quite above herself with happiness.” She was happy because she had things that money provided to supplement her beauty. Studies have shown that owning expensive items may have psychological benefits. Psychologist Ed Deiner conducted a study at the University of Illinois, and found that standard living, measured by household income and owning luxury goods, predicted a person’s overall satisfaction with life.
