First, the military budget must not be cut during peacetime because America must maintain a strong military to be able to negotiate from a position of strength. In example, Ronald Reagan’s negotiations with Russia, which led to the end of the Cold War, were successful partially because of his method of negotiation. Nonetheless, President Reagan would not have had such success if he was not backed by a powerful American military. Currently, we see the other side of the spectrum. President Obama recently signed a nuclear deal with Iran which lifted sanctions and gave Iran billions of dollars. Obama chose not to use American military power in his negotiations, as is evidenced in the removal of sanctions from Iran. America has always led in the development of new technology. One can argue that America still holds this position, pointing out the various technological achievements in the area of drone use in the Air Force. However, one must also observe the fact that there are versions of the B-52 bomber, a plane commissioned in the 1950s, that are still used today. This further proves that the government must allocate proper military funds during peacetime if America is to stay in global leadership
