I regularly read up on my cases and worked in close liaison with the residents and nurses in order to function as a cooperating well-orchestrated medical team. I was intrigued by the diverse spectrum of medical conditions that existed. Patients with the same disease could present with completely dissimilar signs and symptoms. I realized that for an internist, each case is a challenge. There is no monotony. Every patient has to be treated individually and not merely lined up under just another protocol. It was the quest of understanding the mysterious and complicated world of Internal medicine ,that led me to do a 4 year structured residency training in Pakistan in Internal Medicine.It was a time of immense pleasure for me when I was awarded the board certification in Inernal Medicin last year which is the highest qualification in Pakistan in Internal Medicine. During this year I learnt to manage patients with a greater degree of independence and consolidated my problem-solving skills. Dealing with different aspects of patient care, from acutely managing patients in the ER, solving diagnostic dilemmas in inpatients, learning to work as a team I was convinced that Internal Medicine was the field for me.This training also opened new ways of research for me when I conducted a research on central venous catheter related blood stream infection at local hospital.Internal Medicine training boffered a holistic approach to patient care, while allowing each system to be studied in a specialized manner.
