All it took was three days. Three days for my view on life, the way I live, and how I view others to change. Towards the middle of my sophomore year I received an email from my guidance counselor asking me if I wanted to attend the HOBY seminar during the summer. Only one student from the high school was chosen to go, and I was honored to have been that one. HOBY stands for the Hugh O’ Brian Youth Leadership Seminar. 200-300 teens entering their junior year of high school from the Mid Florida region were invited to attend. June 12th, 2014, my mom and I headed out to Eckerd College in St. Petersburg and dropped me off at HOBY. It poured the whole way there but that didn 't stop the staff who continued to greet us the whole time. We checked in and my mom helped me up to the dorm that I stayed in. I got all situated and then headed back down to the lobby and said my goodbyes. From there all the ambassadors, which was what the participants were called, headed into the main room, hanging out waiting for everyone to get there. Of course there were ice breakers and music trying to let everyone loosen up a bit. The whole theme for Friday night was an ‘ice breaker’ theme. We were split up …show more content…
It taught me that it is alright to have flaws and to not always go with the flow. I shared my story with a group of 11 amazing people and I don 't regret it one bit. I was transparent with them and I didn 't receive one nasty look or harsh comment all weekend. We were allowed to speak our mind and we were heard for once in our lives without being judged. I am unbreakable and no one can take that from me. Of course I 've struggled since then, but what I learned at HOBY has stayed with me. I’ve gained 3 wonderful friends from that seminar that I still talk to on the daily. HOBY hasn 't just changed my life, it’s changed a bunch of ours, for the better. All it took was 3 days; 3 days to learn to love life and to love the

The Grades Challenge Freshman year was a difficult year for my grades. I was failing a few classes and it seemed like the harder I focused on the percentage, the farther I got away from it. I talked to my teachers about how I could try to get my grades up and was simply told “you won’t get a better grade.” I was stuck with what I had is what I was told, and they ended up being right about that year. I was worried that maybe something was wrong; maybe I wasn’t as smart as I used to be.…

During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

Many people come into college feeling unprepared, nervous, and unconfident, and while being convinced that I was indeed prepared, I couldn’t help but feel some of these stressful emotions. Over the past month and a half, I have adapted to my new environment that is Pacific Lutheran University (PLU), and feel much more sure of myself as I continue through this semester. I have learned about what skills and mindsets can lead to a successful college experience, such as hope, grit, and resilience. I have also been able to reflect on myself as a person, and identify strengths, values, and abilities I possess that I can use to my advantage. While attending my first college English class we focused on four main strategies when developing essays throughout the semester. These four strategies or processes where among the most common when developing and creating an essay which are journaling and in class free writing, peer-review sessions, group work, and multi-drafting or revising. I had learned most of these previously in high school so I had no problem with them and if I did the learning curve was almost nonexistent.…
