Ethics is not black and white, it presents itself in many different scenarios in health care. It can be tricky to find the right ground, especially in healthcare. Doing the right thing under difficult circumstances is a way we can maximize the good and ensure we are practicing good ethics. “A fundamental truth about life in a complex economy: There is no such thing as moral purity. But there are better and worse choices. Not all cats are gray. The morally responsible professional—as the morally responsible person and corporation generally—will seek the best ways and attempt to follow them. Some think that we are duty bound to jump up on the stage and loudly proclaim our moral convictions in the face of something we perceive to be wrong, regardless of the consequences. Knowing their ethical guidelines will ensure they are providing their best service and save them for any ethical dilemmas they may encounter. Ethical principles are a part of agreeing to do your best to take care of patients. Respecting autonomy, doing no harm, benefiting others, being just, and being faithful are all reminders to doctors to practice good ethics.
Respecting autonomy plays a large role in ethics for our dental providers. Everyone is free to decide how they want to live their life, and we cannot make people do things they do not want to do. Although, most of the time doctors know what is best for the patient, the patient is free to make their own choice regarding treatment. It is not ethical to make a patient think they have to receive treatment if they do not feel that is best. There is a fine line between making sure patients get the care they need, but not forcing them to receive care they do not
