I had high hopes entering college; I believed it was going to be a turning point in my life. Unfortunately things never work out the way you want them to, since I wasn’t able to live up to the expectations handed to me. The plan was simple; go to Bellevue College, obtain an associate degree in business then transfer to University of Washington in Seattle all while retaining a high GPA. Though I’m on track to obtaining a business associate soon, my grades so far has fail to meet expectations. Due to a mixture of family circumstances and a lack of motivation, I have failed to achieve satisfactory grades. Right after graduating from high school my parents filed for divorce, it was an ugly drawn out battle in which I caught a glimpse of my parents’ not so flattering side. As of yet, I’m not ready to enter into my major due to just starting the required business coursework just recently. I will have to wait awhile longer to see the results of my efforts in my core business classes, only after obtaining them will I then be able to gauge my preparedness. What contributed most to my desire in joining the business field would be the time when I was a junior in high school. I was nearing the end of high school career and still didn’t have any plans for the future, that changed however when I decided to take economics. Unlike my other classes, I was able to find economics to be quite the enjoyable experience. Whether it be learning about supply and demand or trading virtual stocks, I was happy with my time spent in the classroom. In turn it has lead me to apply for admittance to UW who has a top-notch business

Growing up in the hardly diverse city of Richmond was not easy for a Chinese girl. Phrases like “All Asians look alike”, “All Asians can’t drive,” and “All Asians eat dogs,” became ingrained in my mind. Images of kids pulling the corner of their eyes while singing “Ling Ling” or “Ching Chong” became a video stuck on replay in my subconscious. In elementary through high school, on my dance and sports teams, and at after school daycare programs, I was the only Asian. The teasing never stopped because I was a rare sight and misunderstood.…
