Festival is a special day related to religious event with its own way of celebration that includes the food, rituals, attire and ceremonies. Hinduism is well known for its cultural and traditional festivals that can be celebrated in every month. In this regard, we will look into six major festivals according to the six Hindu sects which are Vaishnava, Shiva, Kaumaram (Murugan), Saktham (Sakthi), Ganapathyam (Ganapathy) and Saumaram (Surya).

The celebration of Diwali is started with a ritual of oil bath known as ganga-snana on the early morning before sunrise which signifies the act of cleansing of one’s past sins. The importance of Diwali is to promotes a harmonious and stronger bonding among the citizens, be it Hindus or non-Hindus and to enhances unity in a multi-ethnic country like Malaysia. Generally, it is a celebration to glorify the victory of Goddess Durga winning over a demon. It is celebrated for nine (9) days where it is concentrated on the art festival and a primary theme of good over the evil. There are different beliefs on the history and origin of Navratri, but one which is the most legend is the about the mighty demon, Mahishasura whom obtained the power of eternity from Lord Shiva and misused the power to harass and killed innocent people. Hence, in order to get rid of the demon, the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva joined together their powers and created a divine female warrior named Goddess Durga. Mesmerized by the beauty of Goddess Durga, Mahishasura intended to marry her and agreed to Goddess Durga’s condition to have a battle between them. The battle continued for 9 days and at the end of the ninth night, Goddess Durga succeed to win over Mahishasura and beheaded him.
