In a world where cultural sensitivity has become almost a requirement in any professional communication environment, examining the Hispanic cultural finds its importance in today’s reality. The importance of nurses understanding diversity can have a positive impact on how care can be delivered to individuals. Dayer-Berenson, 2016, p.584 states that cultural differences that exist between nurses and patients can result in difficulties with assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluating care, also frustration when the nurse does not meet the cultural expectations of each patient. The patient can become equally frustrated as the nurse when instructions are not understood. Nurses must show the willingness to learn as much as possible, maintaining cultural humility. Maintaining cultural humility may be difficult to do in the current work environment, as nurses are overwhelmed with documentation, that time is not taken to learn more about cultural sensitivity and …show more content…
The following was identified language barriers and proper use of interpreters. Nursing interventions can create and foster an environment that is free of judgement, stereotyping, and segregation. Language barriers can threaten the lives of this group and English may not be spoken fluently or that the nurse has limited or no understanding of Spanish. In communicating with patients, nurses should speak slowly, clearly and in a tone, that is welcoming and instructions given to the patient would warrant a repeat demonstration of verbalization. Employing the use of qualified personnel should be used over a friend, a familiar hospital staff, as miscommunication can occur and this can lead to misunderstanding of given information provided by the nurse. Inferences are drawn from reading from review of literature, as nurses can learn more of the cultural practices of the Mexican-American population. Nurses can foster trusting relationships, build a strong conversational base, and seek the necessary guide to appropriate health care resources available, to provide the best health outcome for all. By obtaining knowledge and understanding of the Mexican-American culture, nurses will be better able to understand the beliefs and
