Pre-Kindergarten Observation

On November 18th, 2015 I visited the Gatelot Avenue Elementary school in Lake Ronkonkoma, New York to perform an observation of a pre-kindergarten class through the SCOPE program (4 year olds). The class consist of 16 students (2 absent) and one teacher (Mrs.Kantor) and one teacher 's assistant (Mrs.Bradford). The purpose of this observation is to observe and evaluate the program 's approach to and uses of creative arts in the classroom.
Creative arts in pre-kindergarten furthers children 's artistic and imaginative growth in addition it helps improve a broader variety of abilities in other regions, such as incorporating perceptual, cognitive, linguistic, and social abilities. In the creative arts curriculum for the SCOPE program, the purpose is to help preschoolers illustrate their reasoning and thinking, while exploring, creating, experimenting, expressing emotions and being creative. Additionally, art develops self-confidence, helps children to partake in group work along with individual work and improves children’s develop with eye and hand coordination. Creative arts activities are usually purposefully open-ended and not regulated, it promotes different ideas without specific concentration on the final creation.

The art center was placed right near the children’s cubbies on the right hand side of the classroom. Near the art center was also the classroom bathroom and sink, which to me seemed to be optimally placed due to the sink being close by for easy access. The art center consists of a square table with a few chairs around it, on the table was stencils, white paper, and a basket with washable paint, crayons, glue sticks and pencils.
