Abstinence Sex Education Ineffective
Adolescence is an age marked by huge change and growth. Sexual and reproductive organs mature, sex drive develops, and thus relationships and social interactions change. Biologically speaking, teenagers are at their prime reproductively. The human body is designed to produce and deliver children during the teenage years. The problem is that humans do not reach their peak emotional maturity until around twenty-five, and the vast majority of teenagers are not financially independent. This confliction inspired sex education programs in hopes of reducing the rate of teenage pregnancy. The development of these programs then spurred the development of two different approaches; abstinence and comprehensive sex education. The divide between the two schools of thought remains strong, but one thing is clear. Statistics show abstinence education has no effect on the reduction of teen pregnancy. In particular, much of Texas practices abstinence education as their only form of sex education. As a result, southern states often experience higher teen pregnancy rates. While causation cannot be proven, correlation has clearly been established. By withholding information on birth control we most likely at least partially contribute to teen pregnancy. The more that we waste time attempting to instill abstinence and its values in our youth, the higher the pregnant rate will climb. Until adulthood, their biologically hardwired urges trump all logic and reasoning. So let’s get ahead of this, anticipate that teenage behavior is in fact predictable they will have sex, and give them the tools that they need to make more intelligent decisions that don’t end in life long
