Important tapeworm parasite of humans
Introduction:
Tapeworm are those parasites which can live in the gut or intestinal tract of animals .It can transfer in humans by eating undercooked meat or fish and comes in contact with feces of infected animals. Several tapeworm species can infect the humans and cause many diseases which can be fatal. Such as Taenia saginata, Taenia solium, Diphylidium caninum and etc.
Classification of tape worms:
There are many type of parasitic tapeworm but they can be classified into two types.
• Intestinal tapeworm
• Tissue tapeworm
Intestinal tapeworm:
In this type definite tapeworm of tapeworm are the humans and intermediate host are the cattle and pigs. Tapeworm completed his adult stage

These are common in India, China, Southern America and Mexico. It can be grow up to 21 feet in the intestine. It can cause neurocysticercosis (specific form of cysticerciosis) .It can occur when cyst grow in brain and cause the brain syndromes and gives neurological symptoms.
Symptoms:
• back pain
• visual loss
• retinal edema
• fever
• eosinophilia Pork tapeworm
Diphyllobothrium latum tapeworm:
It is also called a fish tapeworm. This type of infection can be found in Japan ,China, North and South America. It can easily grow up to 25 feet in intestine. It can cause pernicious anemia. It is due to vitamin B-12 deficiency.
Symptoms:
• Weakness
• Headache
• Chest pain
• Spasticity(stiffness of muscle)
Hymenolepis nana:
It is also called a rodent/rat/dwarf tapeworm. This can infect a human by a intermediate host fleas, beetles and cockroaches .It can grow up to 12 inch in intestine. This type of infection can found in India, America and Japan.It can cause Hymenolepiasis.This is a type of helminthiasis.
Symptoms:
• Abdominal pain

It is associated with the cattle production. Cattles are infected by this type of tape worm when they are grazing on pastures. People are affected by this when they eat the poorly cooked meat. It can grow up to 20 feet in intestine. Its definite host is man and intermediate host is cattle. It can found Africa, South East Asia, Europe and Latin America. It can cause taeniasis. In this disease patient show more symptoms as compare to the Taenia solium.
Symptoms:
• Loss of appetite
• Stomach pain
• Digestion problems
• Weight loss
• Abdominal pain
Tissue tapeworm:
In this type human act as intermediate host and tapeworm do not reach the adult stage in human. In this type Echinococcus species are included.
Echinococcus granulosus;
Its intermediate host is man but definite host is foxes or wolves. Their eggs are identical to Teania species .It can cause cystic echinococcosis (It is also called a hydrated disease) .This disease found in Africa, Europe, Asia, Middle East and Mexico. CE involves the liver and lungs. In this disease cyst is slow growing so symptoms of this is not show early.
Symptoms:
• Abdominal pain
• Nausea
• Coughing
• Vomiting
• Allergic reactions
Echinococcus multilocularis:
It is a cyclopyllid tapeworm produce a disease of alveolar echinococcosis .It is a mimic hepatic carcinoma. Its definite host is fox but intermediate host can be man or lemmings.
