Human Resource Planning (HRP) as a process of HRM has gained a lot of acceptability and importance in recent times mainly due to the growth of industries. HRP basically ensures that right number of people having the requisite skills and knowledge are available at the right place in order to achieve the organization goal. In this chapter we will discuss the definition, importance and benefits of HRP. We will also look into the HRP process.
The organizations vision is formulated by the top management and then they translate these visions into objectives. Cascading down, these objectives further breaks down into strategies/long range plans. These strategies/long range plans usually form the base for the human resource demand. The human resource

Typically, in many organizations when a vacancy occurs, the manager/HR professional responsible for filling it, simply looks around – internally or externally for a new employee who can fit the opening. But recruitment must not be carried out just to satisfy the immediate staff needs. Good organization do something called a “Manpower planning” or “Human Resource Planning (HRP). VUCA environment
VUCA has become a trendy managerial acronym, which stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (Exhibit 3.2). The managers do not have the privilegeof working in a stable environment. They have to cope up with the different kinds of changes in the environment which eventually affects their business and decisions. The decisions of the government about the retirement age can also serve as a factor while deciding on the HRP. The managers need to keep a track of such changes which can affect them in the near future.
Nature of the jobs
Certain jobs particularly in the IT sector, keep on evolving. The technology which might be in demand today might not exist in course of time so the corresponding job also becomes redundant (Exhibit 3.3). The HR therefore has to understand the nature of each job before planning for the same. There also might be case that a particular job now is done by a team of 4 people whereas with the help of technology, in course of time, the same job can be done by one person.
