Implicit Attitudes

Many of today’s events come from implicit and explicit attitudes. Implicit attitude are views that we have that are automatic, most often we are not conscious of these attitudes. Explicit attitudes are those views that we are conscious of and aware. Many Psychologist use tests that apply the implicit attitude test (IAT) to determine their implicit attitudes. These tests usually have a series of questions and use certain keys for objects that go in a category on the left or those on the right. Some Psychologists feel that IAT test is useful and other feel they are not reliable.

The IAT I choose was race. I looked through the list and figured “oh well this should be fun and different”. I can honestly say that I am not biased negatively toward

In order to find accurate information about how Psychologists feel about IAT I went to the American Psychological Association website. According to The American Psychology Association, “IAT is one of those rare research tools that have transcended the lab to catch the attention of not just the social psychologists”. Furthermore, I found that certain Psychologists are comfortable with the test such as Hart Blanton, PhD who thinks the IAT should provide “feedback as a diagnosis and wants it held to the same standard as clinical diagnostic tool”. While other Psychologists such as Greenwald Nosek, PhD believe it is simply an education tool to help people to recognize implicit bias. So my conclusion to these psychologist views is that some respect the IAT as a valid test rrsults while others view it as a tool that may need to be reevaluated to be made a reliable analysis …show more content…
I feel like my results implied something that could not have been farther from the truth. I am very honest and realistic with myself and I believe I would be the first to know if I were at all bias towards another race. I do however, have some bias about parenting and I continue to work through them daily, but race is definitely not one of those categories. I also feel that IAT are just trick analysis to get people thinking. Maybe some people will be convinced they have a bias, but I see it as just a pattern in one way or another. The result of my IAT actually threw me off guard and I was speechless. In my opinion if we listen to every person that had an opinion where would our identity be? The answer is, we would not have our own

Explicit racial bias is difficult to measure in the contemporary society due to the social and political equality, therefore the alternative measure for implicit prejudice has become popular in the area of psychology. The validity of the implicit association test (IAT), is a tool designed to measure implicit prejudice, however it continues to be debated with many research producing conflicting results (Devine,2001;oslan & fazio,2003), however it is still used in many studies. McConnell & leibold (2001), conducted a study using the implicit association test to measures negative racial attitudes towards black people (Vs white people), and if race impacts on social interaction between the two groups.42 white participants completed a word based…

In 1865 slavery in the United States of America ended, and since then the Black Community has been told to: get over it, move on, and, “leave the past in the past.” Since 1865 this country has taken steps toward making “improvements”; in the year 2008 we elected our first President with brown skin! Is that progress or what? Has the United States of America, the land of the free, home of the brave, and the place where all were created equal, left its race issues in the past? As much as we would like to keep our rose colored glasses on--the land of the free has not changed as much as one would hope since 1865.…

I decided to take the race test twice. The first time I took it, I only made the mistake of mixing some European American face with an African American face without paying attention to the categories. My result for the first was the Automatic preference for African american compared to European american. After I got this result, I believed this whole test was inaccurate because with just three mistakes you can not determine someones preference. So I decided to take it over again with no mistakes this time, just to see what my result maybe.…

The results for the Implicit Association Test (IAT) Race Test was not as surprising to me as the results for the IAT Gender Test. According to the IAT Gender Test, I had a slight association of males with the word “career” and females with the word “family” compared to males with the word “family” and females with the word “career.” I had thought I would score higher on the association of females with family and males with a career. Although there was this difference, these results show that my unconscious and conscious beliefs were different.…

For individuals to connect to a goal, it requires adjustment of a current mindset to achieve a group purpose. In this scenario, an officers desire to increase personal awareness of biases is essential to decrease ineffective engagement. Pajares (2006), discussed the importance of ones confidence to accomplish the anticipated goal and if the objective supports the desired outcome. As such, implicit bias is an elusive cognitive process (Staats, & Patton, 2013) connected to a person’s emotions, interest, values, and tenacity among other things (Rueda, 2011). Therefore, the stakeholder’s motivation to improve self-awareness of intrinsic biases of underrepresented groups provides an opportunity to achieve the stakeholder…

Can you think of any real-world contexts in which automatic stereotypes might have a detrimental effect on how whites treats blacks? Some real-world contexts in which automatic stereotypes might have a detrimental effect on the way whites treats blacks would be the police shooting on black men. Stereotyping has lead to some police officers think that black men are all the same thieves and hoodlums. This leads to detrimental effects because a police officer that views back men in this way, changes his behavior to be more aggressive then he might have been with a white person.…

A big issue with cops right now is implicit bias can affect their decision making in stressful situations. Prejudice is a hostile or negative attitude toward people in a separate group, due to their membership in that group (Aronson, Wilson & Akert, 2013). It has been with humanity since a long time ago, but it is only recently, within the 20th and 21st centuries that prejudice has surfaced more than ever, especially regarding the stereotypes of gender, to serve the rights of humans. Even recently, there have been news that were published in regards to prejudice and discrimination. The first news article concerns the shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, in the United States, by another police officer because Rice ‘failed to obey an order to raise his hands’ after being caught pulling out a replica gun, which lacked of an orange safety indicator,…

Even though it uses random assignment to determine which concept and evaluation were paired, there is no random sample of participants. Being an online test, any results are from voluntary responses which is a type of bias. The test does not represent a specific population as a whole and cannot be used to draw statistically significant conclusions. Because of this, I take the end results lightly, but there is something to be said about the idea of implicit association and unconscious prejudice. I agree that these concepts are real and drive our society to do things that we do not realize are biased.…

When I first learned that I would have to complete multiple IAT tests, I automatically had an idea of what I thought my scores were going to be for each test. For all of the tests, I assumed that I would receive a score of moderate preference. I especially assumed that I would receive a score of moderate preference on the Race IAT test because that was the score that I had received when I took the same test last year. Turns out, I received a moderate preference score on the Gender- Career and Age IAT tests, and a strong preference score on the Race, and Disability IAT tests. I think when I first found out that I had received a score of strong preference on the Race and Disability IAT tests I was at first very shocked and confused about…
