Implicit Association Stereotypes

An IAT is a test that asks questions about your attitudes and beliefs of the topic that you choose. IAT stands for implicit Association test. It helps you to discover and describe your self-understanding of a certain character. This program compares differences between the people who participate in taking the test. It measures the strength between concepts, evaluations, or stereotypes. During the test, you are asked to quickly sort words into categories. The first part sorts words to concepts. The second part sorts words relating to the evaluation. The third part combines the categories to sort both concept and evaluation words. The fourth part switches the concepts of the third part. The fifth part combines the categories in the opposite way. The score is calculated by how long it takes to sort the words in the third and fifth parts. The purpose of this test is to see the link between family and females, and between career and males. My result was that my data suggests a moderate automatic association for a male with career and female with family. This means I responded faster when male and career were in the same category rather than when female and career were in the same category. I was a little surprised by the results. I thought that my views were generally neutral with the categories being easily interchangeable. My views were that females can be just as present in a career as in her family, and males can be just as present in their family as they are in their careers. The most common association is the more traditional way of looking at the categories. In today’s society, there is still a struggle for these categories to be interchangeable.
