Phosphorus is an essential nutrient to all forms of life and is required for building DNA, RNA and amino acids (Paytan, 2011). Phosphorus is often a limiting nutrient in ecosystems, along with nitrogen, and therefore its abundance determines the amount of primary production that can occur within a system (Schindler, 1971). The two main types of phosphorus are inorganic phosphate minerals, such as calcium phosphate rock that is mined for fertilizer, and organic compounds containing phosphorus such as ATP, a form of energy ubiquitous in cellular processes. Since the industrialization of society, anthropogenic contributions of phosphorus in the environment have increased significantly (Elser, 2007). The environmental impacts of phosphorus use

The nutrient levels also categorized Loughberry Lake as mesotrophic, and we found that historically, the lake had been oligotrophic in the 80’s and eutrophic in the early 2000’s. This change in trophic states shows the effect that cultural eutrophication can have, and that within a few decades an aquatic ecosystem can be changed rapidly.     During this lab, my main goal was to discover exactly how much phosphorus (or phosphate) is in the composition of plant food, or in the case of the Guided Inquiry portion of the lab, in two different brands of plant food. If I put it in the most concise way possible, to do this, I carried out quite a few processes that caused the components of the plant food to separate from each other. Basically, I got the phosphorus, along with some other substances, to form as a precipitate. Next, through a filtering method, I was able to isolate the aqueous solution (the one that the precipitate formed in) from the solid, yet very fine, precipitate. Now, with the two separated from one another, I was then capable of performing a series of calculations to unearth everything that I needed to know, such as the amount of moles of phosphorus that could be found in the plant food, the amount of P2O5 in grams that could be…
