Our immune system has three line of defenses, beginning with the skin which is our first line of defense opposed to pathogenic invasions. The skin is our primary physical barrier, it encases the body and molds the principle physical barrier to pathogens. The skin protects the body from drying out and avert the entry of disease-causing microbes. Furthermore, the second line of defense is antimicrobial proteins. When our cells are infected with a virus, the chemical response to viral infection is interferon. Interferon is secreted by virus-infected cell and moves to nearby uninfected cells, interferon onslaughts virally infected cells. In contrast, the complement system attacks bacteria by demolishing their cell walls. Inflammation is a series of responses that enables more blood to reach the sit of infection to assist with tissue repair, not permit entry of additional pathogens, and slow the spread of the pathogens. Phagocytes are cells that eliminate circulating pathogens, as well as any cellular debris produced during infections. Lastly, the third line of defense is specific immunity, which depends on a series of white blood cells, named lymphocytes, that perceive and remember pathogens. …show more content…
