The development of leaders is an ongoing process that has no end. It takes a certain type of individual to encompass the knowledge and ethical behavior to be a leader that people want to follow and emulate. As leaders, we need to be teachers, not heroes or dictators. We need to have the experience, integrity, competence, and people-building skills to be effective leaders and build motivation and team work in our organizations. This combined with self-centered attitudes and behaviors have adverse effects on subordinates, the organization, and mission performance. “Leaders may achieve results in the short term but they ignore the other competencies of leads and develops”. (Army Leadership, 2012). These destructive leaders have a toxic effect on their Soldiers and organizations. These leaders fail to build trust and develop their subordinates properly which contributes to leadership immaturity and negative experience.
