Imagery helps to set tone and express emotional ties or discomfort to other characters or places and forces the reader to use their imagination for perspective in a literary work. Emotion and perspective guide how imagery affects us. For example, most literate people are aware of the description of heaven and hell. A sickness plaguing a community or village in an era where medicine and disinfectants were non-existent can be described as a hellish experience and most would understand and be able to visualize their own horrible interpretation of the horror that the writer is attempting to convey. Gaunt gives two separate descriptions, the first of which portrays England as a beautiful and secluded paradise. “This Earth of majesty, this seat of Mars, this other Eden” (Bevington, 2014, 42-43) are the words Gaunt uses to describe England as this untouchable aweing paradise that escapes all evil. Through Gaunt’s description I see England as a Kingdom built by God. As Gaunt lay dying, he also continues to mention that England is now suffering from the hands of its own kings. It’s clear that Gaunt is saddened by what England is becoming, and he attempts to reassure himself that England will once again return to the glory that he used to see in it by saying “For violent fires soon burn themselves out” (Bevington, 2014, 34). What Gaunt means by this is that the king cannot continue reigning in is current manner without becoming a tragic
