Back alley abortions, also known as illegal abortions or unsafe abortions, are when an abortion procedure is done illegally and is commonly associated with life threatening risks (Abortion 1). In 2002, 1.2 million women in the United States turned to illegal abortions and as many as 5,000 women died from the operation (Jost 771). In many states in the US there are very few to none publicly known abortion clinics. In order to get an abortion women often times have to travel a great distance to receive the care they need. Commonly women cannot afford to travel the distance and turn to illegal abortions. The decision about if and when to become a parent is the most important and personal decisions that many people will make in their lifetime, and without abortion rights, many women do not have that choice. “Society benefits when women can commit to education and work and dreams without having at the back of their mind that maybe it’s all provisional, because at any moment an accidental pregnancy could derail them for life” says Katha Pollitt, author of Pro: Reclaiming abortion rights. Abortion is a choice for for people who cannot afford to take care of a child, are not ready for the responsibilities for a child, who would suffer the loss of their family, possibly lose their jobs if they had a child or other mothers, like teen mothers whose lives would change forever (Thomas 137). No matter their parenting technique, a teenage mother will suffer from judgement, from society, and could perhaps have little support from their families and could even get kicked out of their homes. It is common for babies born to teenage mothers to have premature births, to be very small in size and to have physical disabilities and brain damage (Thomas 136). If the pregnant woman chooses to, she should be able to have an abortion and go on with their lives. Some women looking to get an
