Isabelle Easton’s paper on Igor Stravinsky Igor Stravinsky was born on June 17, 1882 in Oranienbaum, Russia. Igor Stravinsky was a conductor, pianist, and film score composer. He was considered the most influential composer in the 20th century. Igor Stravinsky had no other professions other than music. His father was a Russian singer, so he was introduced to music very early in his life. His music began to fade away for a while when he began to study law and philosophy. He first made a name for himself by writing ballet scores for Diaghilev in Paris. Stravinsky first achieved his musical fame with three ballets authorized by impresario Sergei Diaghilev and first performed in Paris. Stravinsky tended to make use of traditional musical forms. Stravinsky was raised in St. Petersburg by his father, a bass singer, named Fyodor, and his mother Anna, a talented painter. I can only assume the Stravinsky’s middle name was from his father. Stravinsky’s parents did not want him to follow in their footsteps so they persuaded him to study law after he graduated school. After he was enrolled into a university, he was invited to train under Vladimir Rimsky Korsakov. After Stravinskys father died, he decided to pursue a career as a composer. Stravinsky was a full orchestra composer. When World War I began, Stravinsky was forced to leave Russia for Switzerland. When in Switzerland, Stravinsky suffered from homesickness and began using Russian folklore as an inspiration for his work. Some of Stravinsky’s works around these times sounded as if they had a jazz influence. Two of Stravinsky’s best known works from his Swiss period were the Fox, composed between 1915 and 1916.
