In Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix, the sudden change of residence from her loving and protective parents to her mysterious and enigmatic aunt induces an immense amount of fear and confusion in Bethany. However, in the time leading up to Bethany’s 13th birthday, her parents begin to act strange. Her mother is always crying, and her father has a grim expression seemingly glued onto his face. One day during the school year, Bethany’s parents take her to her aunt Myrlie’s house.…
My immediate reaction to Beth Thomas' experience/behaviors at the end of the video was multifaceted. I understood that her removal and temporary replacement was a decision made in the best interest of the adopted parents, Beth’s sibling, and for Beth. However, I was concerned that transitioning into a new environment to then be reunified with her adopted parents would generate additional problems for her. I was uncertain where she was placed and weary of religious indoctrination taking place and causing additional confusion for the Beth. Based on the information presented in the documentary, Beth appeared to excel in the new environment which involved rules, structure, and opportunities to build her self-esteem and learn how to develop…

Civil right’s movements often cause a variety of strong and influential leaders to come to light. Florence Kelley was a strong and influential leader during the Women’s Civil Rights movement; she spoke at the National American Women’s Suffrage Association in 1905 to persuade in favor of change for the greater and common good. In her speech, Kelley utilizes pathos, anaphora, and connotative diction to convey her claim that the injustices of child labor can be reformed by women attaining political power (such as the right to vote) and that it is their moral obligation to do so. Throughout her entire speech, Kelley applies pathos to inspire sympathy, feelings of guilt , and appeal to maternal instincts.…

Joyce's short story "Eveline" is set in Dublin during the turn of 20th century. Ireland in the early 1900's was suffering greatly because of the ongoing struggle against English occupation. An observation made about Dublin during this time frame is that “the Irish capital is paralysed by Catholicism, by the English imperialism, by grave poverty and social injustice” (Boyson). Ireland still had not yet recovered from the famine from fifty years earlier that had led to mass migration, starvation, and disease. Joyce incorporates this darkness, weariness, and resignation into his story about Eveline.…
