Main Point: During the passage Operational Verbal Image a character by the name of Captain Knutsen made a decision to immediately find a friendly in order to inform them that the enemy was mounting an attack. Captain Knutsen was forced to take extreme measures since he did not possess a capability to communicate with the forces on the ground. Furthermore, he sat his “bird” down and briefed Captain Takisma of what the enemy was in the process of completing. At that point Captain Takisma was able to inform the rest of the command and the command was able to adjust their plans to effectively fight the enemy. MCDP 1 states that “all actions in war, regardless of the level, are based upon either taking the initiative or reacting in response to the opponent” (p.32). Main Point: The final example pertains to command and control from MCDP 6. Command and control is vital to any and all missions. Without command and control a commander is useless. Therefore, a commander should always adhere to the guidance that is presented in MCDP 6. During the passage readers should be able to identify multiple examples of command and control.
