To my relief I had eventually made up the time lost from the early stages of the examination. I eventually relaxed and began to listen attentively to their conversation. It quickly became apparent that the patient held a wealth of knowledge concerning her illnesses and up until that time could not comprehend how a spinal injury could cause so many other illnesses . If I had organised the examination more effectively I would have been able to communicate and learn from the patients experiences.
No longer the passive recipient, patient's are quickly becoming an integral part of the health- care system, adapting to better manage their conditions as well as maintaining their own health and well-being. It is the responsibility of health-care staff to continually encourage and support the patients as they evolve to better manage their conditions, therefore, directing service users to resources for support and continuing to motivate patients in developing health literacy skills must remain a priority. I will ensure every patient is analysed on a case by case basis. Treatment will be based on their individual needs and In future I will take great care to plan every examination, setting aside a specified amount of time to thoroughly examine every aspect of the patients records in order to pre-empt all possibilities. My inexperienced with that situation meant I was unable to multi-task and communicate while providing treatment.
