IOM Core Competence In Healthcare

My assigned competency was safety. The definition of safety is freedom from accidental injury. In my assigned group for safety, we came to the conclusion that the healthcare industry would not be available or in practice if it weren’t for the competency of safety. I agreed with my group because patients that are involved or admitted into a healthcare institution should have the right to be cared for in a safe environment. With safety, the risk of errors or accidents are reduced or completely distinguished from a healthcare organization or institution. Unanswered questions about safety may be that there needs to be more recent data and research about the quality of care and safety in healthcare settings or environments.
Safety relates to the IOM Core Competencies through providing patient centered care, work in interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice, applying quality improvement, and informatics. A healthcare organization requires

Applying quality improvement is essential because it identifies the errors and hazards in care. Quality improvement is constantly adapting to create a safer environment for patients. This competency helps healthcare organizations recognize and implement basic safety design principles. In addition, quality improvement continually measures the quality of care in terms of structure, progression, and outcomes in relation to patient and community need. Test interventions are also made to change methods and arrangements of care. A popular report from the IOM Core Competencies was, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System (1999). The report explored the status of safety in the United States healthcare delivery system. The report revealed major safety issues in hospitals. The problem with the report is that although it was conducted, there is limited research on how hospitals are fixing the problems revealed in this
