ICD-9-CM Coding Style Analysis

As we look at the World Health Organization that produces and published the International Classification of Diseases system. In 1979 the United States made some modifications to the classification system and implemented the use of ICD-9-CM coding style. Since then healthcare around the world has rapidly evolved and needed to collect more information regarding different diseases and conditions that would affect the world’s population and which turn to a high priority. Due to the increase volume in the health care system the ICD-9-CM system has become outdated and can accommodate patient needs. As of October 1st, 2015 the United States will implement new ICD-10-CM/PCS for providers use across the nation. With the differences and similarities between both of the coding styles there also come the benefits that ICD-10-CM has with the patients and the health care providers. Both of these styles are using E-Codes and V-codes for coding. V-Codes are used to classify the factors that are brought on by the health status and that contact with the all the health services. Also you have the E-Codes describes the external causes for injury’s. Also both of these coding styles use a decimal after three characters.
In the ICD-10-CM codes there are seven different characters and it uses a combination of letters of the alphabet with the exception of the letter U. On the other hand the ICD-9-CM only contains five characters. With the new ICD-10-CM pretends to the high level of detail, in organization and detailed description of the codes.
