For my future occupation I have decided that I want to become a Medical Laboratory Technician or MLT for short. Most people that work in this field work in the laboratory of a hospital, however, you can also work in medical researching facilities and doctor’s offices as well with this degree. This job requires you to “collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances.” By doing these steps you will be able to figure out what bacteria or other microbodies are making someone sick and then you can send your results back to the doctor or nurse so that they can treat the patient properly. Currently, I am not sure what I will specialize in as a MLT, however, I hope to figure that out once I get hands on experience …show more content…
For a degree as a MLT according to Ivy Tech’s degree credentialing, I would be required to complete my pre-requisites/general education and then apply to the program so that I can take the required classes for a total of 70 credits. Most of the time when technicians or technologists work in a particular area for a while they will normally choose to specialize in that area. A few of these specialized areas that I find interesting include: clinical chemistry technologists, microbiology technologists, and molecular biology technologists.
In Indiana and Kentucky, you are not required to have a license to be a medical laboratory technician, only 12 states currently license medical laboratory professionals. Through Ivy Tech in the MLT program you are accredited by The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) as well as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). One of the ways to get your credentialing is through The ASCP Board of Certification (BOC). Through them you apply for the BOC exam to receive your
