A Pedia…What? Young children are often asked what they want to be when they grow up. With much enthusiasm they reply with answers similar to an astronaut, firefighter, teacher, or even Spider Man. Growing up I always wanted to be a veterinarian, just like my dad. I used to go to work with him to get the feeling of being one. I even went to extremes such as dressing up for Halloween as a vet, with a real stethoscope and all. Up until the age of about 12, I realized, maybe I don’t want to be a veterinarian. I told this to my parents, feeling almost ashamed of what I had to tell them, but in fact, they were already talking about me not being a vet, before I even mentioned it to them. Quickly they told me that I should consider being a doctor, a pediatrician to be more specific. A pediatrician is essentially a kid doctor. At the time I had no idea what a pediatrician was, let alone even pronounce it correctly. After much researching and consideration, I decided being a pediatrician was the job for me! The more patients a pediatrician sees, the more money, but also this means more work time. On average a pediatrician works about 50 hours per week. “This includes time spent in the office, visiting patients in the hospital, doing paperwork and being on call after-hours.” (What It’s Like 1.) Also, usually a pediatrician has either a half, or whole day off of work during the week. Sometimes the day’s work can be vigorous with a full day of work, and being on-call after hours, but the rewards are always great. In the end, I believe that being a pediatrician is can be very rewarding. Most pediatricians are satisfied with their job. And their favorite part of being one is the children.
