Though a rather uncreative title, Coming out of Church lacks nothing in interest visually. The painting, done by Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta, was created some time before 1875 in Spain reveals the harsh class differences and cultural norms of the mid 1800’s while also revealing the artists own personal outlook on these phenomena. Madrazo cultivates a scene of gloomy metaphor in his use of rain, and a visual representation of his opnion on the class division through the use of gesture, costume, subject, juxtaposition and light. The end product is both a beautifully crafted piece of work, and a painting that reflects Madrazo’s critique on his belief in the dangers and ailments of class division. Location, location, location; not just important in real estate, it is also prevalent in the location of the scene in a painting.…
Through time, femininity has been viewed as a weakness, but through the symbolism and characterizations of the Mirabal girls, Alvarez displays how femininity can function as a hidden strength. The Mirabal girls face challenges that any revolutionary might expect, with the added attacks on their abilities because of their femininity. Instead of being discouraged and abandoning their womanhood to adopt a masculine, heroic-archetype demeanor, the girls use their supposed “weakness” to their strengths. Since the beginning, Minerva had fought out against the gender roles pushed on her by going to school and speaking out, yet never fully abandons her female nature.…
America has been known as the world that makes dreams come true since the early 1600s. America was the New World and everyone wanted a bite of the big apple. Founded on the hopes of being a fresh start the voyage to America became great. In a sense, America is a fresh start. The variety of people that immigrated into the states was incredible.…
Beginning in the late 19th century, immigrants from Southern Italy and Sicily began to settle in a neighborhood of East Harlem, New York. The immigrants brought with them the values of their homeland, many of which were centered on their devotion to their Catholic faith and to their families. The American-born children of these immigrants often felt oppressed by and disconnected from their parents’ values and ideals, and tensions between the immigrants and their children often ran high. While the Italian immigrants were devoted to their faith and on conscious, intentional, and spiritual levels, it seems that many of their children continued their religious and familial values on cultural and subconscious levels, rather than a spiritual one, and often times did so out of resignation or obligation, rather than genuine enthusiasm.…

Rodriguez’s essay, Aria, shares his experience of growing up bilingual, and what it was like to go to an American school after speaking only Spanish for his entire life. He wanted people to understand and connect to his life story, which I did because I also grew up bilingual. I wanted to share the transition I went through from my elementary school years, which was tough, to my life right now because both experiences are interconnected. Both Rodriguez and I used antithesis, first person pronouns, and diction to convey the struggle that our younger selves went through and how it connects to our current perception of school and society.…
The story “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “The Open Boat” has many different qualities they both share. They both display a prominent use of the same key figures of speech, but one that stands out the most for both is imagery. Imagery is any sensory detail in a work. Meaning anything that seems very detailed and that can be imaged in people’s minds is imagery. Throughout the whole story they show a pattern of imagery very deeply.…

Point of View I, you, he, she, we, and they may seem like nothing more than a couple pronouns but when it comes to the book you are reading the author actually had to put in a lot of time deciding which pronoun he or she wanted to use. Depending on the pronouns used translates to the reader who the narrator is in the book, which affects the story tremendously. When the reader begins to read “The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA” by Manuel Munoz…
My short story is aimed at adults, it was influenced by the book Burn the Dead: Quarantine by Steven Jenkens. I aimed to create a distorted image of the new world that was plagued by an abyss of loneliness to represent the enmity and depression felt by the main character. I wrote in a first person narrative to place the reader in Lillias shoes and to evoke pity for her confusion disorientation and despair. My style model is also written in first person narrative for example “I can’t breathe; the wind knocked out of me” the use of the as the first person narrative allows a more powerful way to convey a closer more personal relationship with the reader and the writer which makes the story more entertaining. I switch between past and present tense.…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…
She also constantly refers the audience as a collective group using pronoun like “we”, “you”, “us” to bring in a sense of closeness and addressing them directly. She wrapped up her speech appealing to pathos once again, “We are struggling for a uniting word but the good news is we have a uniting movement.” Furthermore, she also utilises logos in her speech to allow the audience to have a better understand of the importance of gender equality. An example is the statistics that she provides in the middle of her speech that “UK suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20-49 years of age” This shows the severity of gender inequality and a change to this is required.…
