She stated that she felt as if her parents had abandoned her. With having divorced parents and a father who left, I can connect with Maya. The way she described the situation and how the events proceeding the divorced impacted her resonated with me thus causing the book to have a long-term effect on me. Maya claimed that the time she spent living in a junkyard helped her develop her personality. Personally, I feel as if I can relate my experiences in college to her time in the junkyard. Maya stated that her time in the junkyard helped her understand diversity, and it helped her connect with herself. With being in college, I am exposed to a ton of diversity. Due to this, I am able to connect with myself and develop my personality farther. With Maya experiencing and discussing the same thing in her book, I am able to connect with the book. Though I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings discusses issues that I have not had to deal with, the way she handled them really left a lasting impact on me. For example, I have never been raped, but I understand and connect with the book due to the way she described it.
