In the beginning of the book I Juan DE Pareja a boy who lost his mother at a young age is working of the mistrust of the house and is kept and fed well until one day a disease came and killed off most of the slaves and as Juan is laying there dying a man comes and say that you are blessed because god decided to save him and that he is lucky to be alive. This same man also helps get back his strength until a named Don Carmelo come to take him to his new master and a city called Madrid which would be a very long journey especially when you have to beg and find your own supply of food and the Juan does this Don Carmelo has him to bring him a loaf of bread each morning which makes it harder for Juan to find food but then one jun decides to run …show more content…
This was a life changing moment for Juan because all his life he was treated like dirt but now he is treated a little more like a human but he is still a slave or servant. One day juan decides to start to draw like his master but it is forbidden for slave to learn how to make art so he starts to steal some canvas and paint from his master to practice in secret. A couple years later the great Diego Velasquez is summoned by the king to paint portraits for him. This is a huge honor for his family and him so they go and paint for the king. Then one day Juan and master goes across sea and while they are there he is debating whether or not to tell master that he has been painting and stealing his canvases. When they get back they are in for a surprise one of the daughters of his master die from sickness and his master is devastated. We fast forward a few years when Juan is becoming a man and needs to start to shave. A new apprentice arrives and asks to be taught by the greatest painter in Spain. The guy Soon starts to fall in love with the master's only Daughter Paqueta who is also in love with the apprentice This causes trouble because Paquita knows that Juan can say no to her so she asks him to give notes to the apprentice in secret without her father knowing.
