I Don’t Like Mondays On Monday, January 29, 1976, Brenda Ann Spencer decided to act upon her desire to “do something big to get on TV”. The then sixteen year old got her .22 caliber semiautomatic rifle, and shot for 15 minutes at San Diego’s busy Cleveland Elementary School schoolyard just across the street. Principal Burton Wragg and custodian Michael Suchar were both shot to death, and nine others were wounded, including eight school children. After Spencer barricaded herself in her home for about seven hours, threatening to “come out shooting”, she surrendered to the police. When asked why she decided to go on a shooting spree, Brenda Ann Spencer told the San Diego Tribune, “I just did it for the fun of it. I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day”. Brenda Ann Spencer’s actions created a tragedy in San Diego, but what struck Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats as the most shocking part of the story was Spencer’s pure lack of remorse. The Boomtown Rats were a band created in 1975, and became the first Irish band to top the U.K. charts with their single “Rat Trap”. After the Cleveland Elementary shooting, Bob Geldof wrote the song “I Don’t Like Mondays”, which documented the tragic story, and Brenda’s indifference towards her violent actions.
