My thoughts on the video “I Am”

I believe the point that Mr. Shadyac was trying to make is that he feels that societies need to have more stuff and our need for power and rule is somehow a mental illness. The dictionary defines mental illness as “a broadly inclusive term, generally denoting one or all of the following: 1) a disease of the brain, with predominant behavioral symptoms, a disease of the "mind" or personality, evidenced by abnormal behavior, as in hysteria or schizophrenia; also called mental or emotional disease, disturbance, or disorder, or behavior disorder;.
I believe you can describe the subject matter of his video as a mental illness to some extent. Society does seem to function as if we are all separate entities. We

You get a dirty look from them. I guess most people these days would rather we just push them out of the way or tell them to “move”! I don’t understand that. We act uncomfortable if someone is nice to you-as if we are suspicious of their motives. People seem to make an effort to exert as much power over others they see as beneath them. Ever been in line at the airport? That’s a whole new level of cruelty against someone who has nothing to do with the reason they are getting screamed at. However, they are there to serve us, so they are beneath us- wrong! We need to care more about what happens in the lives of others since it all comes back around to touch us in some way. Don’t be afraid to show you care. I absolutely believe because of this fear to be kind that we don’t realize we ARE much grander than we think. We have a capacity to love in a way that can prompt such change in the world. We need to believe in ourselves and not be afraid of what others might think. Kindness is not weakness. We are a grand form of life and we need to start showing our capacity for caring for others. Everyday simple acts can change a person’s life. We don’t need all the “stuff” to be and feel important. So many people have such low self-esteem they don’t realize just how important they are in the world. We are all strong powerful people inside and we need to remember that. Be powerful

Metzl includes numerous historical instances of government institutions codifying mental illness as threats to social order. From Soviet Russia using a schizophrenia diagnosis to silence political dissidents, to French governments using mental illness as an excuse to oppress colonized subjects in Algeria, history is riddled with examples of governments maintaining the social power hierarchies by medically subjugating deviants. Importantly, he also notes that there is an extensive history of troubling arguments of black mental illness in America. As early as the mid-nineteenth century, medical authorities were explaining that black slaves were biologically unable to live in freedom. Slaves who attempted to escape servitude supposedly had a treatable…

Both wealth and power is interminable but our life is limited and the time wasted chasing those never-ending resources will result in feeling melancholy, loss of enthusiasm, lack in tranquility and Narcissism. Only those who are satisfied with what they have can find happiness in life. Not everyone is born with equal opportunities but those who tend to make the best out of it and enjoy it, can find joy in their life. “Daisy, with an expression of unthoughtful sadness” (13) as Nick Carraway describes pretty much explains the passive sadness within oneself. Daisy’s bright fake smile was a cover up for her inner misery which she couldn’t express outside.…

I enjoyed watching the movie ‘I Am’ by director Tom Shadyac. He added just the right amount of humor in a serious movie that was trying to prove a point and change minds. I felt empowered after watching the movie and almost wanted to drop out and start changing my life and those around me for the better. I found a film review by New York Times that stated what I was telling myself in my head as the film played. The author, Rachel Saltz states, “But as the ideas fly by, your patience may begin to fray.…

In William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, Shakespeare demonstrates how the lust for power can make anyone lose their identity in order to achieve power. Because of the desire for power, people will betray anyone in their way, even if they’re close. They disregard their conscience, which leads to immense guilt, thus a part of their humanity is stripped away. In addition, power makes people greedy.…

Commitment to activism, consciousness, and cultural pride; the three defining characteristics of the traditional Chican@ definition. With such brevity, its easy for one to overlook the imperative value that this definition had to its identifiers. To be Chican@, was not just a geographical symbol, but rather an identity based on political culture that impacted the everyday choices of these individuals. As displayed within Rodolfo Corky Gonzales’s “I Am Joaquin”, the poem and the traditional Chican@ definition are almost parallel to one another, however Gonzalez’s piece depicts the Chican@ identity to contain various classifications including one to be a Mexican American male, catholic, that faced systematic oppression, in order to be distinguished…

Emily Dickinson is well known for her unusual poems, however during her life she wasn’t famous till after she passed away when her family started to find 1000’s of her poems stuff in tiny spaces all around the house. Dickinson’s writing wasn’t well understood during her time, she had a uniqueness that was ahead of her time; she had an amazing use of symbols, capitalism, themes and tones in her writing which make reading her poems so intriguing. While growing up she wasn’t the average women, she had her own thoughts and beliefs which is something I love about her which brings me to one of my favorite poems by her: “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” I 'm Nobody!…
