It is responsible for regulating balance in your body. When you're not consuming calories basically the hypothalamus is working overtime to restore balance through a process called hunger. The hypothalamus is broken down into three areas; the lateral, the paraventricular, and the ventromedial. The paraventricular hypothalamus regulates the hunger. The ventromedial hypothalamus helps tell you when you're not hungry. Another way not eating can affect the brain is through malnutrition. The cells of your brain rely on energy from food just like any other cell in the body without nutrition that food supplies brain chemistry can be negatively impacted.
