I am used to seeing different volunteers every time I go in. But today we had a different receptionist. However, her attitude was warm and cheerful. She was excited to see me, as the usual receptionist told her many things about me. She explained that we had a doctor coming in that I had never met before and he loved to teach. The only professionals in the office were the two dentists, and receptionist. After an interesting conversation, I found out that one dentist only volunteers to keep her skills up. The doctor asked about my level of experience. I can't remember what I said exactly, but I think the dentist assumed I was in dental assisting school. Upon further questioning, he realized I was pre-dental and his demeanor changed. He started explaining technique and the importance of efficiency. I noticed his class ring at asked him where he went to dental school. He told me Baylor and I almost jumped out of my chair! We got into deeper conversation and I expressed my concerns for being a single mother, trying to get into dental school. He assured me that I had plenty of time. He said he knew someone who graduated in their fifties. He did however recommend that I not do that people tuition prices for dental school is astronomical. I feel a little better, even though I still worry about my childless competition. Sometimes I wonder how I compete with that. Somedays I can’t even believe a made it through the without turning in to a total zombie from the lack of sleep. Add hard classes and you get an exhausted mom who is desperate for

When I went into the lab, we were placed with second-year students to observe them doing various tasks. The first thing I observed was the hygienist probing the patient’s mouth to determine the millimeters of each pocket around each tooth. I typed the depth of the pockets into the computer for her. There was a barrier over the keyboard that was removed because I did not have any gloves on. None of the depths exceeded 3 millimeters.…

The teacher tests us on how we correctly preform the steps of the procedure, by first carefully sterilizing our hands, then placing the proper gloves and eyewear, and finally inspecting the “patient” of resigns or decay. The best interpretation of a dental hygienist that I can conceive is a professional whose main job is to teach their clients the essential oral hygiene skills and provide dental care in order for the client to maintain their overall oral health. Among the various responsibilities performed for the client to insure their health and safety includes making sure, we, as dental hygienists first do not harm to the patient by contaminating with pathogens that could have easily been disposed of by simply following the standard rules of infection control. As stated by Ester Wilkins “Dental healthcare personnel have a professional obligation to serve all patients with comprehensive oral care, including patients with known or unknown communicable diseases.…

After my freshman year, I started attending a career academy, Carl Wunsche Sr. High School, where I chose Dental Hygiene as my career pathway. After making this choice, I had no idea how much of the spectrum of dental hygiene I would be experiencing for the next couple years of my life. I performed hands-on practicals, as well as volunteering at a continuing education course for Dental Hygienists. Progressively, I took part as a participant of a regional and state Dental spelling bee.…
