Introduction
A vehicle becomes hybrid when it combines two or more power sources. In fact many people have probably owned a hybrids vehicle at some point. Hybrid vehicles are powered by two energy sources such as a combustion engine or fuel cell. These are the vehicles having the potential to be two to three times more fuel- efficient than conventional vehicles .In general hybrids capture energy lost during braking and return it to the on-board battery. Hybrid vehicle operates the alternative power unit to supply the power required by the vehicle, to recharge the batteries, and to power accessories like the air conditioner and heater. A hybrid can achieve the cruising range and performance advantages of conventional vehicles with the low-noise, low-exhaust emissions, and energy in dependence benefits of electric vehicles .In the coming years, hybrids can play a significant role in addressing several of the major problems faced by the world today: climate change, air pollution, and oil dependence. The motor can take care of city travel which poses stop and go conditions as well as power-consuming add-ons such as the A/C or power-windows and power-steering. At high speeds, the gasoline engine supplies power. When the car is in uniform motion or when it is decelerating, it generates power which charges the

Most of the times other alternate source of energy for hybrid vehicles is electricity hence these are called electric hybrid cars. These cars combines both the power of gasoline engine with that of an electric motor. In mild hybrids, the gasoline engine provides the main source of power, and the electric motor provides additional power whenever needed. The second type of hybrid can be termed as a full hybrid, where the gasoline engine and the electric motor can operate the vehicle

In an article for Ensia, Marin Swain talks about the elimination of gas vehicles and solely relying on the electric. While the Prius is not fully electric the article gives insight into the use of gas as a fuel source and what it means to the environment. The most interesting point she makes comes with her implied idea that hybrids may be a stepping stone onto the next clean energy source. “The U.S., which have a long history of moving toward better, cleaner energy… coal helped spare vast tracts of American forests from the saw, since it meant we no longer needed wood for heating” (Swain). Swains statement is indeed a fact that at one point in time coal was the new green fuel source and that by its use and incorporation in to life that it would better the environment by limiting wood consumption.…

Cars are not 100% efficient, if they were all the chemical energy that is in the gasoline would be converted into kinetic energy. Instead, energy is used up in other ways in the process of moving a car. Some energy is lost due to friction, such as the wheels against the road or the moving metal parts of the engine. The car needs energy to power the headlights, air conditioner, and windows. Other examples of energy usage that is not kinetic would be the air resistance or the car breaking and…

These batteries are usually composed of nickel- iron, nickel-zinc, zinc-chloride, and lead acid. One challenge that designers face is in the design of the electric car and its weight. The battery and electric propulsion system consist of 40% of the weight of the car, whereas in a gas-powered vehicle, the engine, coolant system, and other exclusive powering devices are only about 25% of weight of the car. The electric car has two sources of power, one electric and the other an internal combustion engine. The electrical power is consumed for stop-and-start driving at low speeds, whereas the gasoline propulsion is mainly used for highway speeds and mileage.…
