Hutchinson-Gilford progeria, also known as progeria is a disease that causes children to age rapidly. Progeria is very rare. There are less than 1,000 cases a year in the U.S.
According to Mayo Clinic a child with progeria has a lifespan of thirteen years. Children with progeria often have fragile bones, stiff joints, and hip dislocations. Plus, children with progeria have may have delayed and abnormal tooth formation, which causes them to have different looking teeth than a normal person.
Symptoms of progeria begin to appear in the first year or two of life. A lot of the symptoms include slowed growth, with below-average height and weight. Some more symptoms of progeria include narrowed face, small lower jaw, thin lips and a long and pointy nose. Plus, a very large head almost too big for your face, and big eyes in which the eyelids don't completely close. Also including, spotty wrinkled skin, with some visible veins, and a high-pitched voice. There are currently some treatments on progeria. but they depend on the stage a person with progeria is on. For Example, some of the treatments may include a daily dose of aspirin may help prevent heart attacks or strokes. Or medications to help prevent blood clots, and growth hormones to grow a little more. Also, occupational and physical therapies may help stiff joints, and hip problems.
