Local sustainable farms are different than other farms because the consumers know where their food comes from. “If you go to farmer’s markets, you can meet the people who grew your food and ask them questions to your heart’s content. I met the rancher who raised the cow that gave me my steak. He showed me a photo of him with the cow and told me that he never fed her any corn. That’s important to me because I’m afraid of corn.” (Nikita). Nikita explains how local sustainable farms are open with how they farm, which means that they are confident in the foods that they are providing you. It is not like industrial farms where food is shipped long distances where it is processed again and again. Instead, when farmers process their foods themselves, they earn the trust of the consumers. Some believe that farmers lie about their products so they can lure in customers “for the money”. Michael Pollan explains that “a short food chain helps the consumer know what he or she is buying… By selling directly to consumers Joel gets to keep more of that money.”(Pollan 187). It is a win-win for both that consumer and provider. There would be no reason to try to work around it. Unlike other industrial or industrial-like farms, local sustainable farms are open about what is provided, reassuring consumers about the value of the products. Then that …show more content…
Local sustainable farmers use healthy practices in farming, leading to more healthy plants, leading to a healthy consumer. “Because of the healthy soil and the natural farming techniques, the food produced through organic farming is richer in minerals and micronutrients¹. The healthy organic plants are often much more flavorful than those produced through conventional farming.”(Greentumble). Other than how industrial farms are focused on yields and amounts, local farms focus on quality and nutrition. The better the crops/animals are treated, the better the outcome. Taste is not scientifically proven, so it is not legitimate, but “According to a State of Science Review done in 2008, organic food has more nutritional superiority than its non-organic counterparts” (Sustainable baby steps). If taste will not be proven, the effects of the food will. It is even said that “the increased levels of plant nutrients and phytochemicals that are present in organic produce help to preserve the produce longer.” (Greentumble). When children grow up, food choices can affect them in many different ways, including academically and physically. The healthier the food, the healthier the
