H.I.T.S Symbolism
According to Wikia, a deer symbolizes peace, beauty, gracefulness, and love.(Wikia) In the short story, "Hunters in the Snow" by Tobias Wolff, a deer is the main goal of Tub, Frank, and Kenny's hunting adventure, but there may be something else that they are hunting as well. The characters all carried guns on the hunting trip. The reason they carry these weapons is obvious, but there is a deeper meaning as to why they carry them. Snow is reoccurring in this story, it's everywhere, it's inescapable in a sense. This story symbolizes the characters struggles in truly finding themselves, and solving the problems they face in everyday life.
As stated before, the deer symbolizes peace, beauty, gracefulness, and love. One could believe that the deer is what the characters are hunting in more than one way. The explanation for this is that the deer and what it symbolizes is what Tub, Frank, and Kenny are lacking in life. This gives light as to the reason they are hunting in the first place, not purely for the enjoyment of hunting but also to "hunt" for

There is a deeper meaning to the guns in this story, and they are a big part into the transition into the second half of the story. In my mind, the guns symbolized anger at themselves and at each other. Like when Kenny said "I hate that dog"(170) and ended up shooting the dog, I believe he was expressing his anger at not getting his deer for the year as well as doing what the farmer had asked him to do. When Tub shot Kenny with his rifle, Tub may have been a little motivated by his feelings towards Kenny, because Frank and Tub had told each other that neither really liked Kenny all that well. The guns also fit in with the symbolism of the deer, they were going to use the guns to basically "kill" their flaws but in turn ended up using them on each other. Something this tells us is that violence and anger never solve

Immanuel Kant, German philosopher and central figure of modern philosophy, once said, “Immaturity is the incapacity to use one's intelligence without the guidance of another.” Immaturity is driven by ignorance and can lead to action without analysis of consequences. Immaturity consumes thoughts and actions and leads to a distorted perception of right from wrong and societal expectation. Although the boys’ survival instincts are put on trial in the novel “Lord of the Flies”, the primary contributing factor in the boys’ struggles on the Island is their immaturity. Throughout the mounting of the sow’s head, Simon’s ascent up the mountain and Piggy’s death, this grave immaturity is demonstrated.…

The deer in the story serves as imagery as the thing that gets stuck between nature and man. The whole entire short story is situational irony for somebody like a character of David Potter to leave what he had in a job where he was his own person and on his own in nature. Knowing this and the fact of how people knew how Vonnegut felt about industrialization. The connection is made that the whole story is situational irony. He also uses a motif when the constant theme of machinery and being yourself is present throughout the…
