According to Wikia, a deer symbolizes peace, beauty, gracefulness, and love.(Wikia) In the short story, "Hunters in the Snow" by Tobias Wolff, a deer is the main goal of Tub, Frank, and Kenny's hunting adventure, but there may be something else that they are hunting as well. The characters all carried guns on the hunting trip. The reason they carry these weapons is obvious, but there is a deeper meaning as to why they carry them. Snow is reoccurring in this story, it's everywhere, it's inescapable in a sense. This story symbolizes the characters struggles in truly finding themselves, and solving the problems they face in everyday life.

There is a deeper meaning to the guns in this story, and they are a big part into the transition into the second half of the story. In my mind, the guns symbolized anger at themselves and at each other. Like when Kenny said "I hate that dog"(170) and ended up shooting the dog, I believe he was expressing his anger at not getting his deer for the year as well as doing what the farmer had asked him to do. When Tub shot Kenny with his rifle, Tub may have been a little motivated by his feelings towards Kenny, because Frank and Tub had told each other that neither really liked Kenny all that well. The guns also fit in with the symbolism of the deer, they were going to use the guns to basically "kill" their flaws but in turn ended up using them on each other.
