Novel Research Essay: The Hunger Games

Susan Collins is an American novelist and television writer. She is most known for the famous The Hunger Games book series. Collins grew up wanting to be a writer and decided to pursue this passion and attended Alabama School of Fine Arts and later completed an M.F.A. degree in Dramatic Writing from New York University. This story takes place in a futuristic country called Panem, that used to be North America. There are 12 districts that are all controlled by an authoritarian state called The Capitol. In a time called the Dark Ages, the districts rebelled and lost. To remind the districts of their failure, every year the Capital forces two child tributes, a boy and a girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen, from each district to fight to the death in the Hunger Games where only one tribute makes it out alive. In District 12 during the 74th annual Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen steps up to take her younger sister, Prim's place in the games. Katniss and the male tribute from district 12, Peeta Mellark, must venture into the Hunger Games, and be prepared for anything. Both manage to survive long enough for the Gamemakers to make a never before seen rule where both tributes from the same district can become the winners. Katniss finds Peeta in a near death state, but nurses him back to health, all the while “falling in love”, so that the may have a better chance of survival. After surviving the final battle with dog mutations and main antagonist Cato, the Gamemakers recant their revision of the rules, Katniss and Peeta decide to simultaneously eat poisonous berries so neither can win and the Capitol will …show more content…
Collins introduces the Katniss who immediately shows her hatred of the Capitol and general discontent with the ruling elite. The living conditions of the people of Panem and Katniss’ blatant distaste for the Capitol seem too familiar to readers who have personally experienced the failure of the US economy and see the gap between the rich and poor only getting bigger due to the recession. Many hard-working Americans who have been crippled by the recession can sympathize with Katniss who struggles to survive. Inside her head, the opening pages seem withdrawn, defeated and resentful. Katniss’ narration and invoking images resemble the picture of the repressed citizens of the United States who do not participate in politics, because it’s easier to accept the oppression of the elite class. The opening chapter of The Hunger Games appears as a potential future of the United States if the economic recession causes the wealth gap to get bigger along with the ruling of a society by just a few rich and
