Peter Ustinov, an English actor, had once said that “comedy is simply a funny way of being serious” (goodreads.com). Comedy is often utilized as a sort of crutch and platform to highlight issues- be it people’s problems, the insane global climate, or to express the absurdity of it all. In her article “Family Guy and Freud: Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious,” Antonia Peacocke discusses how those who watch the show Family Guy should realize the creators’ jokes should be viewed as what they are intended to be: a harsh reality rather than crude. Peacocke argues that when taken at face value, Family Guy’s humor could potentially be considered offensive. Instead, the creator Seth Macfarlane intelligently uses satire to mock American culture. The article is overall effective with one minor weakness. The article gains a majority of its effectiveness from the author providing her own personal experiences to help the reader relate to the topic at hand, and by pulling examples straight from the show to back up her argument.…

Most readers and analysists of Art Spiegelman’s Maus tend to become so focused on the grim nature of the comic’s subject matter that they overlook the possibility that there exists aspects beyond guilt and trauma that influence its narrative. Likewise, the most commonly overlooked of these aspects, and also possibly one of the most controversial, is humor. Throughout the centuries, individuals have employed humour, whether it be in the form of satire, irony, or understatement, to help them cope with trauma. Likewise, it comes as no surprise that, in detailing his father’s horrific experiences as a Jew in Nazi occupied Poland through a comic where Jews are represented as mice, Poles as pigs, and Germans as cats, Spiegelman employs humor. Moreover,…
