How does one show human compassion and empathy towards another person's misfortunes or struggles? First when showing compassion and empathy you are putting yourself in their perspective from another view so you can see how that person is feeling physically and emotionally. In addition, human compassion does not have to be shown from person to person, it can also be shown from other things like art, music, or even a story. Moreover, human compassion and empathy can be shown many ways and you are able to develop an understanding for that person's misfortunes. Harper Lee does an excellent job at doing that in her novel to Kill a Mockingbird. The story revolves all around the narrator Scout (Jean Louise) growing up and her experiences. The story also introduces the nasty-rumored Boo Radley and racism. Boo Radley whose real name is Arthur Radley is thought to be a cruel man. Tom Robinson, in the book is a colored man who was falsely accused of raping and hurting a white woman. Now it is up to Scout's father Atticus to defend Tom in the trial but Atticus is now looked at differently from his town for defending Tom. This does not stop Atticus from giving his all to defend Tom in court. Trying to comprehend other’s situations and feelings Scout is on a journey to see life from others perspective.

Lee’s strong use of Tom Robinson's trial really hurts Scout the narrator because she is the force that allows the audience to feel what another person goes through. Then in Steinbeck’s short story he uses this mother and father to show compassion by letting a child they don't know who is ill get the best spot on the bed. They would also let their children wonder from school for a few hours so they would not be picked on. Both authors produce’s the audience with texts that follows with a deeper understanding of the world. Well one story will reveal what a person will go through is unjust and the other is just about caring for someone in need and not putting yourself before others. Some situations produce compassion for the audience members not because it is sad but it is an inspection on our lives and this inspection could feel what another person
