The importance of the Human Resources (HR) Sergeant in regards to the Profession of Arms is prevalent throughout the Army. This essay will discuss what it means to be a profession, how leaders balance the profession’s role, the Army professional culture, and the HR Sergeant’s role within the Army profession.
A profession is a form of work that is considered irreplaceable and takes years of practice to be mastered (The Profession of Arms, 2010). Simply put, a profession is what you do for a living. Examples of different professions include educating as a teacher, practicing medicine as a physician, and raising crops as a farmer. Being a Professional Soldier is no different. Soldiers are inherently drawn to this line of work because of the sense of duty they feel to their country and fellow Americans. Professional Soldiers become experts in their field, are proficient in land and war operations, and get embedded in the Army culture that surrounds them (The profession of Arms, 2010).
The Army functions like a very intricate machine. Balance must be maintained in order for it to continue running smoothly. The Army’s leaders are responsible for maintaining balance. In order for this to happen, leadership must consider several factors such as the history of the organization, past conflicts, current climate of operations, future operating environments, and the progressive direction that the Army is taking (The Profession of Arms, 2010).
The Army has its own distinctive culture. A culture is made up of a particular group’s values, beliefs, day-to-day routines, ethics, morals, and code of conduct of which they live by (The Profession of Arms, 2010). Leaders in all echelons are paramount in fostering a positive and professional Army culture. They lead by example and set the tone for their peers and

They are prevalent throughout the Army and are commonly embedded within many different types of units in order to fulfill their many duties. They work together with leaders of different areas of concentration in order to help maintain balance and preserve the Army’s professional culture.
HR Sergeants are stewards of their profession. They play a vital role in the Profession of Arms because they are present through each stage of a Soldier’s career. They assist with in-processing them into the Army, maintaining their documents, help further their careers, aid when it’s time for a Soldier’s departure from the military, and so much more.
In conclusion, HR Sergeants play a vital role in the importance of the Profession of Arms. The Army is a very unique profession with many different facets and relies on its leaders to set the standard. Leaders are responsible for maintaining the Army’s professional culture and maintaining balance. The importance of the HR Sergeant can be seen throughout the ranks of the entire
