The first women in space was valentina tereshkova. She went in space 1963. She spent almost 3 days in space in orbit earth 48 times. That was her only trip in space. She later toured around the world to promote soviet science and became involved in soviet politics. Tereshkova was born on march 6, 1937,in Maslennikova, a village near the Volga river about 170 miles northeast of Moscow. Her father was a tractor driver and her mother work in a cotton mill.. Tereshkova father was killed during world war ll . leaving her mother to raise three kids alone. Valentine didn't start school till she was 8 years old. And had to leave school when she was 16. An error in the spacecraft’s automatic navigation software caused the ship to move away from Earth. Tereshkova noticed this and Soviet scientists quickly developed a new landing algorithm. Tereshkova landed safely but received a bruise on her face. After that she never flew again.She later became a test pilot and instructor and earned a doctorate in technical sciences. On Nov. 3, 1963, Tereshkova married fellow cosmonaut Andriyan Nikolayev. Their first child, a daughter named Elena, was a subject of medical interest because she was the first child born to parents who had both been exposed to space. Elena later went on to become a medical doctor. Tereshkova and Nikolayev divorced in 1980. 40 women had gone up to space since Tereshkova, to orbit around the earth.Sally Kristen ride was the first American women to go up to space was an American physicist and astronaut. She was born May 26 1951 and died July 23 2012. She joined NASA in 1978, and became the first American women to go in space in 198e.
