The years between 1980 and 1984 were part of the decade that reflects what people have today. These years are most known for big hair, bright clothes, fun music, and the computers. Technological advancements contributed a great amount to modern technology. Music and popular entertainment, along with conflicting sporting events and political events shaped what today is called 80’s.

The 1980 winter Olympic games were held in Lake Placid, USA. The United States only received 12 medals, falling behind the Soviet Union and East Germany by more than 10 medals (“1908 Winter”). The year 1980 was probably most known for the US boycott of the summer Olympics games held in Moscow, Russia’s capitol. The situation with the Soviet Union in Afghanistan made President Jimmy Carter worried about the safety of American athletes in Moscow (United States). The 1984 winter Olympics were held in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia with the United States in 3rd place with only 8 total medals. Reacting to the US boycott in 1980, the Soviet Union boycotted the Los Angeles Olympics held in the US in the summer of 1984. Even with 14 countries boycotted against the Los Angeles Olympics, more countries and athletes attended then ever recorded in Olympic history.
