There are more than 465 known species of sharks living in our oceans today. Sharks are an apex predator and are at the top of the food chain. They help control the population of fish below them in the food chain. Research has shown that the decrees in shark population has had a major effect in the oceans eco system.

Most species of sharks eat the normal fish, meaning they eat, crustaceans, mollusks, plankton, krill, marine mammals and other sharks. Sharks also have an accurate sense of smell, this allows them so detect blood in the water from miles away.
Population
There are many types of sharks so it is hard to determine the exact population of all the species but they cover a large geographic area. However, sharks are decreasing due to many threats that they face in the wild.

Commercial fishing and water pollution are some of their most common risks. The commercial side of fishing is responsible for killing millions of different sharks each year, they do this to make profit. One of the more common methods after the shark it caught is to fin the fish meaning that they only remove the fins off the sharks while leaving them alive in the ocean. Not mentioning whale sharks, they are caught in many different regions of the world because of their valuable body parts which is held for trading. In most cases these types of businesses are highly illegal.

One of the main obstacles to preserving sharks is the thoughts of which people have of them, this impacts in a more negative way. People would need to change their ways of thinking sharks are not just a dangerous type of fish. Sharks are needed to keep the ocean a heathy and are a virile part of the ocean biome.
