After having a drugged drink, Sam wakes up in Gutman’s apartment. While searching the apartment, Sam stumbles upon a newspaper with an item about a ship arriving in San Francisco in Hong Kong. Sam’s secretary Effie tells Sam that the ship La Paloma has been torched. After Effie finishes informing Sam, a man staggers into the office and dies from multiple bullet wounds. Next to him is a bundle wrapped in newspaper. Effie finds out the man is Captain Jacobi from La Paloma. Sam discovers the falcon in the newspaper. After receiving an urgent call from Brigid he tries to track her down and finds a deserted building. When Sam returns home, he finds Cairo, Gutman, Wilmer, and Brigid waiting inside, all three men holding guns. Spade agrees to give
