How To Reduce Child Poverty In America

The authors Lee Rainwater and Timothy M. Smeeding, addressed the problematic of children living in poverty in America. They explained that although to all advances and improvement of the most industrialized nation in the world, “A significant percentage American children are living in families so poor that health and growth are at risk” (Ferguson, 2007, p.739). Policy makers are criticized of not given the necessary and deserved importance to children living in poverty that compared with other industrialized nations, “child poverty is not a matter of affordability—it is a matter of priority” (p.770). Violence is defined by the author Knox as, “Physical aggression with the purpose to control, intimidate, and subjugate another human being” (D. Knox, 2015, p.99). Known also as physical abuse, violence include, “pushing, throwing something at the partner, slapping, hitting, and forcing the partner to have sex” (p. 190). Another very common type of manipulation is emotional abuse, defined in our textbook as, “nonphysical behavior designed to denigrate the partner, reduce the partner’s status, and make the partner feel vulnerable to being controlled by the partner” (p.193). Emotional abuse is also known as symbolic aggression, because the partner suffer psychological and verbal harassment with the sole purpose to be controlled by the other. As the therapist Robert Burney states, “Emotional abuse is underneath all other types of abuse—the most damaging aspect of physical, sexual, mental, etc., abuse is trauma to our hearts and souls from being betrayed by people that we love and trust” (p.193). Usually, the abuse in a relationship is committed by males against females. However, female abused of partner also exists. There are many reason why females abused their partners, but the most common is that in their effort to get their partner attention, females lose their control and express violence. Females intention is not to control their partner; nevertheless, the relationship is affected anyway
