How To Read At Home

When a parent approaches me to get help on his/her child’s regarding reading and writing difficulties I would ask them for more details such as why they feel that the student is behind in school. I would try to understand what the problems are. First of all, as educators, it is our responsibility to understand why that parent felt that way, diagnose the problem and then help them. I would ask them the following questions in general, how much does the child read and write at home?, does the child have books that are on his/her reading level at home?, which language do they speak at home?, Do you know if your child has any reading disability? I would do some research about the problem and look at the best practices before giving any advice them. I would develop an individual plan based on my findings for the student, parent, and the teacher. I would recommend that the teacher and parent must work together in order to help the kids. I think it is really important for parents to read books to their children. It is so important to have discussions about books because as children get older many times, parents see their children decode the words but they cannot have conversations about what they read. Schools should have a systematic approach about how to identify students who are struggling with reading and writing at early grade levels and have a specific action plan for each of those with learning disabilities such as Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Dyslexia, Language Processing Disorder, Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities, Visual Perceptual/Visual Motor Deficit, and ADHD (LDA 2017). In classrooms, teachers should have frequent assessments and analysis of their student performance in order to adjust their instruction for those students with reading disabilities. Providing appropriate service for students with LDA is very important because, according to Harris-Murri, King and Rostenberg (2006), student’s psychology may be affected detrimentally when they receive inappropriate service or incorrect service hours (p.
