Urinary Tract Infection: A Case Study

Introduction
For many centuries, cranberries have been the focus of interest owing to their beneficial effects in preventing Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). Cranberry juice has been used to treat UTI by natives of North America since 1683 (Dan et al, 2004). American Indians used the berries to treat kidney and bladder ailments, calm nerves and draw poison from arrow wounds. American mariners and whalers consumed cranberries to deter scurvy while on voyages in high seas (Yu, 2011). The term Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) in medicine refers to the presence of a specific threshold number of bacteria present in urine. This number is usually greater than 100,000/mL and may consist of urethral syndrome and pyelonephritis as well as cystitis (Dan et al, 2004). Lower UTIs are those that involve the bladder while upper UTIs involve the kidneys. UTIs include cystitis which is bacteria in the bladder, pyelonephritis, which is an infection of the kidneys and urethral syndrome (Epp &

These are polyphenolic phytochemicals that have been proved to harbor potent antioxidant activity including the capability to scavenge reactive nitrogen and oxygen species. Of importance is that anthocyanidins have been proved to inhibit uropathogenic adherence via interference with type P fimbriae. Current research that supports use of cranberry as a prophylaxis measure refer to anthocyanidin as an active ingredient (Eagan et al, 2002). Further, there is an argument that anthocyanidin prevent type P fimbriae from attaching to uroepithelium and even prohibit or reduce expression of fimbriae right at the nuclear level. The theory is backed by the fact that anthocyanidins are very effective in preventing adhesion but not in dislodging bacteria that are bound actively. This theory explains why cranberry is effective if administered as a preventive measure rather than a curative

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there was “A 6 percent increase in CAUTI between 2009 and 2013; although initial data from 2014 seem to indicate that these infections have started to decrease” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015, p. 1). These statistics indicate interventions implemented to prevent the incidence of CAUTIs were effective in 2014. Unfortunately, there is still an estimated there are more than 13,000 deaths associated with Urinary tract infections in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,2015, January).…

Specimen can also be taken from the rectum and pharyngeal. The specimen is streaked onto a Thayer-Martin or Martin Lewis selective medium. It can also be streaked onto a chocolate agar nonselective medium and incubated at thirty-five Celsius to thirty-six Celsius and with a five percent of carbon dioxide.…

According to the Center for Disease Control, 1 in 25 people admitted to the hospital will also suffer from a nosocomial, or hospital acquired infection (CDC, 2015). That number totals to 1.7million people a year, of that, catheter-associated urinary tract infections account for 35% and result in 8,205 deaths (AHRQ, 2015). These infections cost hospitals $565 million dollars each year and the majority of them can be prevented (AHRQ, 2015). Due to the unnecessary money that is spent treating this…

Overview Cystitis is a type of urinary tract infection that causes inflammation in the bladder. The infection is typically caused by bacteria that normally exist within the gastrointestinal tract. After stool is passed, some microorganisms continue to linger around the anus. Sometimes these bacteria make it to the bladder by passing through the urethra. Because they tend to thrive in the environment created by urine, it is not unusual for them to multiply quickly and cause an infection as they sit in the bladder.…

Also, there are 15-17 cases per 10,000 women and 3-4 cases per 10,000 men. Out of the population of those infected with pyelonephritis most of the cases involve the older population, more specifically those over the age of 66 (Fulop, 2014). A reason the older populations are at a greater risk for developing pyelonephritis is because they may not be as diligent or unable to perform proper perineal care daily due to becoming weaker. Also with aging there is a decline in the immune response due to the phenomenon called immunosenescence, which is not fully known, all these add to the increased risk of developing pyelonephritis (Lewis et al.,…

A urinalysis is done to look for white blood cells, red blood cells, bacteria, and to check for certain chemicals such as nitrites in the urine. A urine culture is a clean catch urine sample which means the patient is to use a medicated wipe to clean the head of the penis or the area between the vagina “lips” (labia) to provide a non-contaminated midstream urine sample. With that sample the physician is able identify what bacteria is in the urine and what antibiotic can be used to kill the growing bacteria. Treatment for cystitis caused by bacteria is…

The salts aggregated into a colloid state as small molecule, and with added urate they increase in size. Ammonium ions are the most prone to become flakes and leave the colloid suspension causing buildup of aggregates that obstruct the urinary tract. The article found that dietary purine helps to increase the amount of uric acid being excreted. These types of uroliths are not common in most mammals with the exception of Dalmatian dogs, humans, apes, and Eurasian otters because they lack uricase to convert uric acid into allantoin. Allantoin can pass through the kidneys without causing crystals unlike uric acid.…

The urinalysis is when a urine culture is sampled for exactly which bacteria invaded the body and which antibiotic it is sensitive to for treatment. Antibiotics can treat most urinary tract infections (UTIs) successfully. The goals of treatment for UTIs are to relieve symptoms, eliminate the infection and prevent recurrence, and prevent unlikely but serious complications such as kidney damage and sepsis. In pregnant women, treatment protects the woman and the fetus. Treatment for bladder infections is usually a combination of antibiotics and home treatment.…
