National Guard The National Guard is the branch of the military that operates as a “home guard.” Like servicemen and women in other branches of the armed forces, members of the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard undergo military training to protect the nation in case of attack and to aid americans during time of crisis, including national disasters like earthquakes and floods. Unlike other branches of the military the guard is mostly stationed on home soil (though they can be mobilized by the federal government to fight overseas). Each state unit is controlled by their state government when they are not mobilized by the federal government. When you join the national guard, you can choose from a range of different career paths to work and receive training in.…

Upon completion of training I was assigned to the 2301 MP Company in Sembach, Germany. Once I signed into the company, I was 2 percent over at that time and was placed on the Army Weight Control Program.…

I worked in a sales related field for over sixteen years. Some of the successful National Guard recruiters I worked with had big outgoing personalities while others were more reserved. Some of those that were really successful had the big personalites, but some of the more reserved recruiters also were very successful. That pattern worked both ways as there were also failures on both sides of the personality scale. Deeter-Schmelz, D., & Sojka, J. (2007), indicated that there are no conclusions that one personality type would be more successful than another when it comes to sales.…

With new laws being enacted in the military and the ever present possibility of conflict, a relatively dormant topic has emerged, the Selective Service and the military draft. As with any emerging topic, differing opinions towards the issue have risen, Economists tend to argue that the agency “captures people who would prefer to be doing something else and forces them to bear the cost of national defense disproportionately by working for a submarket wage”(Applebaum), military officials lean towards the idea that the effectiveness of our all-volunteer force should not be compromised, while lawmakers themselves question the agency believing that maintaining the Selective Service simply makes no sense. Even the average, working class, American…

During this time in history, the colored man was still not allowed to defend himself within the military. Douglass began to instill the importance of belonging to the United States army to the colored and promoted their inclusion among the whites. He had gained the support of enough of the population to make an impact. Finally, in 1863, as a result of Frederick Douglass’s actions, Congress had authorized colored enlistment in the Union army (8, 15). Frederick was asked to help recruit colored soldiers, including his two sons, into the Massachusetts 54th Regime, the first group ever to contain colored militia (6).…
